LOUIS XIII Cognac
The history and future of an icon
Each LOUIS XIII cognac is the work of generations of cellar masters. Since the company was founded in 1874, they have been preserving the best distillates for future generations. Rémy Martin cognac is so unique that it should be tasted drop by drop. That's why LOUIS XIII Cognac is now launching THE DROP, a one-centilitre mini-decanter held by a shoulder strap, aimed at a new generation of cognac lovers.
Louis XIII cognac is considered to be one of the finest cognacs in the world. It is an icon of the spirits industry. Today, the essence of LOUIS XIII is presented in its purest form: THE DROP. Each mini-bottle contains one centilitre and can be carried over the shoulder by a shoulder strap available in five different colours.
A tribute to King Louis XIII
LOUIS XIII is produced by Rémy Martin, or rather by the parent company Rémy Cointreau, at its headquarters in the Cognac region of France. The name LOUIS XIII was chosen as a tribute to King Louis XIII of France. He was the reigning monarch when the Rémy Martin family settled in the region in the early 1700s and is regarded as the founder of the Cognac appellation, until then commonly known as Brandy.
An intergenerational work
In 1841, after more than a century of cognac production, Paul-Emile Rémy Martin took over the reins of the family business. He broke with tradition by bottling the cognac instead of continuing to offer it in casks. In 1874, he went even further by selling a blend of his best Grande Champagne cognacs in a decorated decanter. LOUIS XIII was born.
Each LOUIS XIII cognac is the work of 4 generations of cellar masters. Since the creation of LOUIS XIII in 1874, they have kept the best distillates for the following generations and have selected the best eaux-de-vie to create the next LOUIS XIII. As the cellar master will not necessarily be able to taste the final product, he must carefully train his successor from the outset.
The current LOUIS XIII cellar master, Baptiste Loiseau, who was trained by his predecessor and took over in 2014 at the age of 34, is also preparing his legacy for his successors.
The emblematic decanter
The idea for the LOUIS XIII bottle was born in 1850, when Paul-Emile Rémy Martin came across a metal bottle dating from the Battle of Jarnac (1569). He bought the metal bottle and secured the rights to it. In honour of the 150th anniversary, he then designed a glass replica of the bottle to use as a container for his finest cognac. Today, each crystal decanter is handmade and mouth-blown by French crystal makers.
LOUIS XIII is now also available in a small format, the size of a centilitre. THE DROP is available at Globus and other stores.
