Borges, a Genevan citizen

Calvin’s city pays tribute to one of its adopted citizens

Release
June 2026

On 14 June, 1986, Jorge Luis Borges passed away on Grand-Rue, in Geneva’s Old Town, at the age of 86. The Argentine writer had spent his youth in Switzerland during WWI, discovering “French, German, Schopenhauer and love”, and chose to return to Geneva, a city he considered one of his “intimate homelands”, for his final days. His ashes rest in the Cimetière des Rois in grave no. 735, beneath a yew tree, just steps from Calvin’s final resting place. The 40th anniversary of Borges’ death will be marked by a full programme of conferences, readings and gatherings on both sides of the Atlantic, notably in Geneva, at the initiative of the Los Conjurados association.
