As the Alpine-X (Crossing) project linking the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (CH) to Testa Grigia (Italy) is on track to be finished by the summer of 2022, Zermatt and Valtournenche have joined forces with plans to co-host men’s and women’s World Cup downhill races. The event would be the first in history to take place over a national border. Beginning at the Gobba di Rollin (3,899 m) above the Klein Matterhorn, the race is set to finish in Laghi Cime Bianche (2,814 m) in Italy. Envisioned for the start of the season in November, it would be both the highest and the longest (almost 5 km) downhill in the World Cup. The event promoters hope to be ready to co-host the first races in Autumn 2022.
