Plaine Morte
Before it’s too late
Perched at 2,900 m, the Plaine Morte is one of Europe’s largest glacial plateaus, and its meltwater feeds the Rhône and the streams of the Bernese Oberland. Despite being some 200 m thick, this giant is living on borrowed time and is shrinking: it’s 8 km² today compared to 11 km² half a century ago. Its geography unfortunately prevents upstream snow accumulation, so many glaciologists speculate — considering the effects of climate change — that the glacier will melt into a lake… So, see it while you can! Starting from the cable car station, follow the short Trail of Another Time path that’s marked with cairns, to observe the glacier’s evolution.
